Non-Aligned Movement was one of the key
programs of Yugoslav foreign policy, which
brought high reputation to the Republic as
well as high position among the countries
of the world. The First Conference of Non-
Aligned Movement was held in Belgrade from
1st to 6th of September 1961. It was the first
major political event that took place in the
country after the Second World War, when
Yugoslavia was a host to a large number of
foreign delegations. The Conference was at-
tended by 25 member countries and a num-
ber of countries with the status of an observ-
er. The attendance of more than 800 foreign
and domestic journalists in Belgrade speaks
in favour of the significance of this event. For
the purpose of holding the ceremonial part of
the Conference of Non-Aligned Movement in
1961, the Great Yugoslavia Hall in the Palace
of the Federal Executive Council was chosen
and for this occasion a large oval table was
made, identical to one located in the main
Assembly hall. The main participants of the
Conference were seated at the oval table in
Yugoslavia Hall. The date of September 1st,
1961 was a date that dictated the Palace’s
construction and furnishing speed. The cere-
monial part of the Conference was planned to
be held in the Palace of the Federal Executive
Council, and work meetings were held at oth-
er locations around the city.
